Why get a Medigap Plan ?

The purpose of Medigap Plans is to fill the gaps in the coverage offered by Original Medicare (This is the Part A and B). These Medigap policies help pay some of the health care costs that the Original Medicare Plan doesn’t cover . Original Medicare Part A covers approximately 80% of your hospitalization expenses and Medicare Part B covers approximately 80% of your Lab & Physician services. The purpose of the Medigap plans is to cover some or most of remaining portion.
The Medigap Plans that any Insurance company can sell you are “standardized” Medigap policy. These Medigap policies must all have specific benefits in order that one can easily compare the plans.
There are upto 12 different standardized Medigap policies available depending on the Insurance company (Medigap Plans A through L). Medigap policies must follow Federal and State laws. These laws protect you. A Medigap policy must be clearly identified on the cover as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.” Each plan, A through L, has a different set of basic and extra benefits.
It’s important to compare Medigap policies because costs can vary. The benefits in any Medigap Plan A through L are the same for any insurance company.
To qualify to buy a Medigap policy you must have Medicare Part A and Part B. You are responsible to pay the monthly Medicare Part B premium and the Medigap insurance premium.

When compared to the Medicare Advantage Plans, Medigap Plans offer the policy holder greater flexibility with regard to choice of doctors and providers.
